HEATHER GALLAGHER

LIFE’S A SPECTRUM DOULA CARE

Heather started using photography as a young child as a simplified and exact way to communicate with her mother who is a deaf, Chinese refugee and immigrant with limited ASL and English language comprehension. She continues to use it as a tool to tell universal and personal stories across the spectrum of life experiences including birth and death.

In 2019 she became a birth and postpartum doula through DTI (Doula Trainings International) and End of Life doula from INELDA (International End of Life Doula Association). She has had the honor of attending hundreds of births and sitting bedside with the dying in their homes, hospice and hospital as a documentarian since 2010.

With each client she calls on her unique life experiences and perspectives with the goal of creating an emotionally safe experience that allows the individual and/or family to fully experience whatever life transition they are going through. Because of the intimate nature of this work, trust is required both ways.

When helping individuals and families navigate the major life transitions of birth, postpartum and/or death, Heather facilitates open and honest conversations, shares helpful resources and provides practical, emotional and physical support. Her practice is anti racist, trauma informed, and inclusive of all genders, families, outcomes and bodies. She is inclusive to those using surrogacy, who adopt, and loved ones who have experienced loss due to miscarriage, suicide and accidental death.

Heather is a public speaker who talks candidly about her unique childhood and life experiences, mental health and a lifetime of witnessing how others live through her work as a photojournalist. She is currently writing her first book, a memoir.

Heather lives in Winooski, VT with her husband, two sons and many animals. She serves doula clients throughout central Vermont and virtually. When not working, Heather enjoys taking long walks with her young sons and old dog, and binging mysteries, documentaries and trashy reality shows with her husband.
